childhood

William Gallas was born and raised in the Paris suburb of Asnières-sur-Seine . His parents come from the French overseas island of Guadeloupe . When his parents returned to Guadeloupe, Gallas was allowed to stay with his uncle in France - but only under the premise that he would become a professional footballer.

Career

societies

William Gallas applied at the age of 14 in Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines to the football school of the French national association FFF , the Institut National Français (INF), and was accepted into it after the entrance test. In his first years, however, he could not convince there. In view of the high-profile competition, which also included Thierry Henry and Jérôme Rothen , the director of INF Gallas, who was playing as a striker at the time, wanted to expel from school, but his “two coaches” have “supported” him “strongly made ”so that he could stay. Gallas was retrained as a counter-strong full-back with weaknesses in defensive work. So he didn't arouse the interest of big clubs either. So he signed with SM Caen , who was playing in Division 2 at the time. He made his debut in professional football in the 1995/96 season. At the end of his first year as a professional, the team rose as champions in Ligue 1 . After another year and due to strong performances, he made Olympique Marseille attention, who signed him in 1997. After initial difficulties, Gallas rose to become a regular player and top performer in Marseille. Together with players like Fabrizio Ravanelli , Laurent Blanc , Andreas Köpke , Robert Pirès , Florian Maurice and Christophe Dugarry , the club wanted to build on more successful times. In 1999 they became runner-up behind Girondins Bordeaux . In addition, Galles reached the final of the 1998/99 UEFA Cup with Marseille , but where they failed 3-0 at AC Parma . In the final, however, the defender was not used. In the following years, the club also disappointed at the national level. It was only after a strong 2000/01 season that top European teams became aware of Gallas. In London , too , his strong performances did not go unnoticed, whereupon Chelsea signed him for 6.2 million pounds. Despite strong competition, Gallas quickly established himself as a regular and made 30 appearances in his debut season. In addition to his compatriot Marcel Desailly and players like Mario Melchiot , Frank Lampard , Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Gianfranco Zola , the club gradually developed into a top English team at this time. In 2005, the team celebrated the championship for the first time since 1955 and the second championship success ever. Gallas made 28 appearances in the dress of London in the title season. In the following year, the triumph was repeated, with only John Terry and Frank Lampard completed more league encounters than the French. In 2006 the Frenchman flirted with a move away from Chelsea, but coach José Mourinho was not happy with it. It wasn't until he allegedly threatened Chelsea to score an own goal that he received clearance. He moved to Arsenal on September 1, 2006 in exchange with Ashley Cole, who has long been courted by Chelsea . Because of his rustic style of play he was often affectionately referred to by his teammates as the "walrus". At Arsenal, too, he quickly became a top performer and formed the defensive association of the Londoners with Kolo Touré , Gaël Clichy and Emmanuel Eboué . Arsenal coach Arsène Wenger appointed Gallas as the new team captain for the 2007/08 season. In late November 2008, after Gallas criticized teammates, he was dismissed as captain and replaced by the then 21-year-old Cesc Fàbregas . For the 2010/11 season, the defensive player moved to city rivals Tottenham Hotspur . With this move, Gallas is the first professional to be under contract with the three English capital clubs Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal. After the 2012/13 season, he left Spurs. In October 2013 he joined the Australian A-League club Perth Glory and ended his active career there after a year.

National team

Gallas has also been on the pitch regularly for the French national team . Since his first international A match against Slovenia on October 12, 2002 , he has been in action for his country at the 2004 European Championships and 2006 World Cup . He was also part of the French squad at the 2008 European Championship finals . Two years later he was again in the squad for the World Cup in South Africa .

He also took part in the 2003 Confederations Cup in his own country. The French won this tournament, Gallas was used three times.

At the EM 2004 in Portugal he played in all three group games, where he was replaced in two group games ( England and Croatia ), each in the 81st minute by Willy Sagnol . Gallas played through in the quarter-final defeat against eventual European champions Greece .

Two years later in Germany , this time at a world championship, he was again one of the regular staff at Les Bleus. The defender played through in all three group matches, as well as in the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals. In the final against Italy he played through again, but could not prevent the defeat on penalties.

In 2008 at the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland , he also played through all of the French games. France was eliminated in the group stage as bottom group.

In 2010, the French selection left the World Cup competition disappointingly after the preliminary round. Gallas was used in all three games in his country.
