Sir William Jardine, 7th Baronet (born February 23, 1800 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † November 21, 1874 in Sandown , Isle of Wight ) was a Scottish ornithologist and editor of zoological works.

In 1821 he inherited from his father the title of Baronet , of Applegirth in the County of Dumfries , which had been awarded to his great-great-great-grandfather in 1672 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. He was married twice and had seven children from his first marriage.

Jardine published the forty-volume natural history The Naturalist's Library , which was popular with all layers of Victorian society in his day . The 40 volumes mainly describe the four areas: ornithology (14 volumes), mammals (13 volumes), entomology (7 volumes) and ichthyology (6 volumes). Each subject area was looked after by one of the leading specialists. James Duncan , a noted Scottish entomologist, wrote the volumes on the insects . Among the artists who illustrated the volumes was Edward Lear . The cover picture shows the portrait of the French entomologist Pierre André Latreille . The entire work was published in Edinburgh by William Home Lizars .

In addition, Jardine supervised an edition of the Natural History of Selborne by Gilbert White (1720-1793), which made the work of this naturalist known again. Jardine also published the book Illustrations of Ornithology (1825-1843) and an inexpensive edition of Birds of America by the American ornithologist Alexander Wilson .

Jardine was the first to describe numerous species of birds , alone or with his friend Prideaux John Selby . Its zoological author's abbreviation is Jardine .

Since December 1825 he was a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1845 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .
