William John Codrington, 1855

Sir William John Codrington GCB (born November 26, 1804 , † August 6, 1884 in London ) was a British general .

Life

The eldest son of Sir Edward Codrington , he joined the army young and became a colonel in 1846. Codrington was appointed major general at the start of the Crimean War in June 1854 and led a brigade in the Battle of Alma and the Battle of Inkerman . In June 1855 he was promoted to division commander. After the resignation of General James Simpson, he took over on November 11, 1855, with the rank of lieutenant general, a few months before the end of the war, the supreme command of the British army in the Crimea .

In 1857 he entered Parliament for Greenwich . From 1859 to 1865 he was Governor General of Gibraltar and in 1863 he was promoted to General. He retired in October 1877 and died in London on August 6, 1884.
