The Bischöfliche Willigis Realschule is the secondary school branch next to the grammar school in the school association Bischöfliche Willigis grammar school and real school. It is located on Willigisplatz in the old town of Mainz. Today's secondary school was opened in 1972 with the first two classes after the first classes in the common orientation level began in 1970. The co-educational secondary school had 220 students in 2015.

history

The Willigis Schools began in the St. Marienschule in 1852. In 1901, after the new school building was rebuilt, what was then the 'Realschule' was brought into being, the Realschule was preceded by the 'Bürgererschule'. The secondary school at that time was an eight-year school which was divided into three so-called preliminary classes and five real classes. In 1907 the sixth real class, the Untersekunda, was founded. The Untersekunda was a class level in which the students could acquire the one-year license required for the military rank of reserve officer. This school leaving certificate is now comparable to the secondary school leaving certificate.

In 1910 the school had ten teachers, four of whom were diocesan priests and three were school brothers .

In 1929, the construction of the upper level at the Marienschule began, which was completed in 1932 with the first class who passed the matriculation examination. With that, the Realschule had practically become a Gymnasium. The school was closed under the National Socialists in 1938.

The school reopened in 1955 (until 1964 Marienschule) remained a high school reserved exclusively for boys until the secondary school was re-established.
