Path through the Wimbachklamm

The Wimbachklamm is a gorge in Ramsau near Berchtesgaden in Bavaria that extends for around 200 meters and is cut by the Wimbach torrent . It is located in the Berchtesgaden National Park at the narrowing exit of the Wimbach valley .

The short gorge section of the valley is recorded as geotope no. 172R018 (see list of geotopes in the Berchtesgadener Land district ).

geology

The dominant rock of the gorge is the Dachstein limestone , which was deposited in the Upper Triassic . Numerous fossils in the walls of the gorge testify that a sea must once have existed here. A hike through the gorge to the Wimbachschloss can take a period of around 50 million years. The rocks occurring here are Flaserkalke, Rotkalke, radiolarites and Hornstein leading limestones of the Jura.

tourism

The first footbridge through the Wimbachklamm was created by Ramsauer Holzknechten to the Holztrift for the salt works . After the Trift was discontinued in 1843 , tourists have been able to visit the gorge on a hiking trail with bridges and wooden walkways since 1847 or use it as a worth seeing stage on further hikes.

The gorge is most easily reached from the Ramsau district of Wimbachbrücke, where the car park and bus stop are located. The gorge is only accessible from below; in the summer season, the municipality of Ramsau requires an entrance fee. From the upper end of the gorge, the visitor can return on a parallel path towards the Wimbach bridge or hike further into the Wimbachtal. Further above is the Wimbachschloss , a place to stop for hikers, and about two hours' walk further, in the area of the tree line, the Wimbachgrieshütte on the eastern mountain slope . Further inns are located at the entrance of the Wimbach valley a few hundred meters before the gorge. The gorge is open from May to October.
