history
It was founded on October 16, 1836 by Voortrekker leader Andries H. Potgieter . This made it the first city that could be established on the territory of the later independent Boer Republic of Orange Free State . Potgieter gave her this name in memory of a won battle against the Matabele under their chief Mzilikazi .
Winburg has always been a center of Boer resistance against Great Britain . In the 1840s, together with the town of Potchefstroom and surrounding areas, it formed the short-lived Boer republic of Winburg-Potchefstroom .
Winburg is located in the middle of low hills and a flat grassy landscape, which is known for its acacias .
