Winchester Palace was a palace in Southwark , now London, south of the Thames . The residence of the Bishop of Winchester , built in the early 13th century, was one of the finest buildings in the London area. After a major fire in 1814, it is now only in ruins. These are near the later built Southwark Cathedral .

Southwark was the largest city in the Diocese of Winchester when the palace was built and was close to the City of London and Westminster . Bishop Heinrich von Blois had the palace built to have a residence for his activities in London. The building was used as a residence for 300 years. It was used as a prison during the English Civil War. In the 17th century there was a division into various rental and storage buildings.

Today one wall of the great hall still stands. This had long disappeared under later buildings and was only rediscovered after the fire of 1814. The last restoration took place in 1972. The building is managed by English Heritage .
