Winfried Bernhard Scharlau (born June 12, 1934 in Duisburg ; † December 7, 2004 in Hamburg ) was a German journalist , author and historian . He was a war correspondent during the Vietnam War , ARD correspondent and until 2000 moderator of the television program Weltspiegel .

Life

Scharlau studied history , philosophy and public law at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, at the University of Innsbruck and the University of Oxford . In Münster he became a member of the Catholic student union Germania and in Innsbruck of Rhenania , both in the KV . Scharlau was in 1960 when Werner Hahlweg with the dissertation Parvus-Gelfand as a theoretician in German social democracy and its role in the first Russian revolution (1867-1910) for Dr. phil. PhD.

Since 1964 Scharlau was editor and television correspondent for the NDR , in 1967/68 he was a war reporter for the ARD mainly in Southeast Asia , especially in South Vietnam , Hong Kong and Singapore . Scharlau became known with his reports from the Vietnam War . In 1975 he was one of the last western journalists to leave the embattled South Vietnamese capital Saigon by helicopter.

In the following years Scharlau published critical reports on the change of power in the Philippines on television. From 1978 to 1981 Scharlau was editor- in- chief at NDR in Hamburg . In 1991 he became ARD correspondent and studio manager in Washington , where he worked with Wolf von Lojewski for a year . From 1993 to 1998 he was director of the Hamburg State Broadcasting Corporation at NDR. However, he first became known to a broad audience as the presenter of the Weltspiegel program , which he presented for 16 years up to the year 2000.
