Winton Motor Carriage Company was an automobile and engine manufacturer in Cleveland , Ohio .

description

The company was founded on March 15, 1897 by the Scottish immigrant Alexander Winton . He became president, Thomas Henderson vice president, and George H. Brown secretary and treasurer. The company had patented a number of inventions related to auto mechanics.

Winton tested his first two fully functional car prototypes on a 1,300-mile drive from Cleveland to New York City.

In 1898, Alexander Winton built the first pickup truck with a gasoline engine in the USA.

In the years that followed, Winton became one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the United States . In 1924 the Winton Motor Carriage Company ended automobile production because competition from other manufacturers had become too great. The production of gasoline and diesel engines for stationary applications, marine and railroad applications continued under the name Winton Engine Company , registered as early as 1912 .

On June 20, 1930, the Winton Engine Company became a subsidiary of General Motors . The former Winton general engine division was closed in 1962.
