The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (Engl. Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia , ESCWA and UN ESCWA) is one of five regional commissions of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations ( ECOSOC ). The areas of responsibility are the countries of the Arabian Peninsula and the North African countries Egypt , Sudan , Libya , Tunisia and Morocco .
history
The Commission aims to promote and develop its 17 member states in the social and economic field. It was in 1973 as the Economic Commission for Western Asia (Engl. Economic Commission for Western Asia , founded ECWA or UN ECWA), it was renamed in 1985 and the social tasks of the commissions should clarify in the region. The UN-ESCWA is based in Beirut ( Lebanon ) at the Khalil Gibran Park in the Zokak el-Blat district .
