A knowledge district primarily describes a geographical area of ​​a city that is strategically conceived by local urban planning and economic development and that is heavily influenced by university institutions or even belongs to a university . The term “knowledge quarter” can be assigned to the current urban planning issues of New Urbanism and the mixed use .

By designing and implementing knowledge districts, areas with adjacent campuses are to be made heterofunctional and promote the transfer of knowledge between universities, science , society and business . At the same time, the networking of actors in knowledge districts is to be promoted in a targeted manner through strategic spatial planning, such as the special design of sidewalks and resting places. Furthermore, a university campus can benefit from urbanization , the liveliness of which is increased after the end of the lectures and during the semester break. Knowledge quarters are used in research u. a. therefore highlighted as a particularly great challenge for urban planning, since the strategic composition of the actors already resident there and those still settling there can be a decisive factor for long-term success.
