Wittlerbaum is a country inn on the southern city limits of the independent city of Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia , in the Davert forest area . It is on the road between Amelsbueren and Davensberg . The name suggests that there was originally a barrier in the immediate vicinity , where road tolls were collected. Such barriers existed elsewhere in the Davert, for example the Schimmelbaum near Ottmarsbocholt or the Kannenbaum near Amelsbüren.

On March 19, 1644, the papal envoy and later Pope Alexander VII , Fabio Chigi, stayed in Wittlerbaum on the way to Munster. There he took part in the negotiations to end the Thirty Years' War , which resulted in the Peace of Westphalia of 1648.
