Wolfenburg - Excerpt from the Topographia Hassiae by Matthäus Merian , 1655

The Wolfenburg (also: Schloss Kelsterbach ) is a former castle in the Hessian city of Kelsterbach . The stately building with its four corner towers was north of the village not far from the banks of the Main .

history

The Wolfenburg was built between 1564 and 1580 by the owner of Kelsterbach, Count Wolfgang von Ysenburg-Ronneburg , in the Renaissance style. He hired the master builder Georg Rubin to build the palace .

During the Thirty Years' War the castle was robbed and badly damaged in 1639. Not least because of the great financial outlay, the building was not restored and it slowly fell into disrepair. From 1789, part of the Kelsterbach porcelain factory was located in the cellar of the ruins . Finally, in 1809, the wine merchant and later mayor Georg Schenk acquired the site and built a classicist city villa above the former castle cellar .
