politics

At the end of the 1970s there were differences of opinion between Mayor Armin Klein and the CDU. While the CDU advocated a new building for the Kurhaus , Klein spoke out decisively against the project. The CDU therefore decided not in favor of Klein in the 1980 mayoral election, but in favor of Wolfgang Assmann's nomination. Klein then ran as a candidate for the SPD , but did not receive a majority (he received 24 votes, Wolfgang Assmann 34).

In 1986 and 1992 the city council confirmed him in office. In the 18 years, the focus was on strengthening the city's financial strength through the settlement of profitable companies, the cultural profiling of the city ( Hölderlin Prize , Fugato Organ Festival, sculpture biennale " Blickachsen "), stimulating civic engagement and promoting international understanding. In addition, Assmann worked on a voluntary basis in management positions in the municipal umbrella associations and self-help organizations at state and federal level.

Important projects such as the new building of the adult education center in 1988, the expansion of the English Church into a cultural center in 1990, the renovation of the Seedammbad in 1992 and the relocation of the town hall in 1996 were part of his term of office. The town partnerships with Marienbad in 1991 and Peterhof (1994) were also launched under Wolfgang Assmann .

In 1998 he stopped taking part and instead supported his successor Reinhard Wolters .

In 2014 he was made an honorary citizen of Bad Homburg.
