Wolfgang Back (2004)

Wolfgang Eckhardt Back (born April 9, 1943 in Nastätten ; † December 5, 2019 ) was a German television presenter and science editor who became known through the television magazine Hobbythek and the WDR Computer Club. He is one of the co-founders of German computer journalism.

Life

After completing elementary school in Oelsberg im Taunus and Patersberg , Wolfgang Back attended the Wilhelm-Hofmann-Gymnasium in Sankt Goarshausen . Until he graduated from high school in 1963, he worked alongside school as a local reporter for the Rhein-Zeitung in Koblenz and served around 20 localities in the district. He then studied electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen .

From 1970 he translated articles in the then newly published Dutch journal elektor into German and began working for WDR in the same year . Initially, he made monthly reports on "curious technical inventions" for the television program Science Today . In 1972 and 1973 he worked with Jean Pütz on the television program Introduction to Digital Technology , from 1974 to 1981 he then moderated the television magazine Hobbythek together with Pütz .

Several issues of the leisure magazine eff-eff followed , which later became the WDR Computer Club , as well as various science programs such as the inventor exchange , Know how - Know how , why? Therefore! , Kaleidoscope and others.

Back had the greatest success with the WDR Computerclub program , which he hosted together with Wolfgang Rudolph from 1981 until it was discontinued in 2003. He then took over the editing of the WDR program ServiceZeit Technik until it was also discontinued at the end of 2005.

Although he said he had retired in May 2006, Back and Rudolph revived the “Computer Club” in July 2006 in the form of a 30-minute podcast entitled Computer: club 2 . From July 24, 2007 to May 10, 2016, the new edition of the computer club was shown as a monthly television program on the local broadcaster NRW.TV on cable television and was available for video viewing on the program's website. From July 9, 2010, the broadcast also took place via the media service TecTime TV (formerly DrDish TV ), which has since been discontinued, via the Astra 1H satellite and the Sevenload Web 2.0 media platform .

At the end of 2016 there was a falling out between Back and Rudolph after Back actively worked against his former colleague Rudolph, threatened him with legal action, blocked access to the ComputerClub2 website and also eliminated him from the ComputerClub2 website. Since then, thanks to donations, the concept has been produced by Rudolph in his own studio and distributed as CC2.tv on YouTube . Back was never involved in the new format initiated by Rudolph. After the separation, Back himself produced content for the old CC2 homepage in cooperation with the technology blogger and former WDR ComputerClub employee Heinz Schmitz, who also co-moderated Back and Rudolph at NRW.TV. Since then, Wolfgang Rudolph has only been working for his successor format CC2.TV.

In March 2017 Back gave Scene World Magazine a video interview in which he talks about his beginnings as a journalist, his contact with computers and the WDR computer club. A dubbed English version of the interview was published in July 2019. Another interview from 2018 was given to the YouTube channel “Generation Testbild”.
