Wolfgang Hofmann (born March 30, 1941 in Cologne ; † March 12, 2020 there ) was a German judoka .

life and career

Wolfgang Hofmann surprisingly won the silver medal in judo middleweight at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . The Cologne native was the first German judoka to win a medal at the Olympic Games.

In the same year Hofmann also won the middleweight judo world championship, also in Tokyo.

Between 1965 and 1970 he was German judo champion four times; he won these titles in Esslingen am Neckar , Hamborn , Bochum and Munich .

In addition, there were eleven German judo championship titles with teams in the junior and senior division.

In 1965 Hofmann became European champion in judo (middleweight). In 1968 and 1969 he won the European Championship with the German team.

From 1961 to 1963 he completed language and sports studies in Japan. Here, above all, his ideas around the sport of judo developed. Hofmann was a qualified sports teacher and worked for a long time as a lecturer at the Sports University in Cologne .

Wolfgang Hofmann was a member of the ESV-Olympia Köln e. V., until he was the owner of the traditional judo club SC Bushido Köln in Cologne for many years. This club was founded on January 1st, 2006 and renamed JC Bushido Köln Süd.

Hofmann died in March 2020 shortly before the age of 79. His grave is located in the Cologne North Cemetery .

Honors

Wolfgang Hofmann was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf in 1964 by the then Federal President Heinrich Lübke - the highest sporting award in the Federal Republic of Germany.

On July 4, 2007 Hofmann was awarded the 8th Dan .
