Wolfgang Neugebauer (historian, 1944)

Wolfgang Neugebauer (born October 9, 1944 in Vienna ) is an Austrian historian and for many years was the scientific director of the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW). He is honorary professor for contemporary history at the University of Vienna .

Life

After graduating from the Bundesrealgymnasium Wien 18 (1962), Wolfgang Neugebauer studied history and geography at the University of Vienna . In 1969 he was at Ludwig Jedlicka with the thesis history of social democratic youth movement in Austria to Dr. phil. PhD .

In 1970 he began working in the documentation archive of the Austrian Resistance, of which he was the scientific director from 1983 to November 2004 as successor to Herbert Steiner ; he was followed by Brigitte Bailer-Galanda .

He also acted as President of the International Forum Mauthausen (in the Federal Ministry of the Interior ) from its founding in February 2004 to October 2007 . He is Vice President of the Action against Anti-Semitism in Austria and a board member of the Institute for Science and Art and the Austrian-Israeli Society .

Neugebauer teaches at the universities of Vienna, Linz, Graz, Klagenfurt and Salzburg. In 1995 he was appointed honorary professor for contemporary history at the University of Vienna.

He is married and has two children.

research

As the scientific director of the DÖW, Neugebauer's main research areas were the history of the labor movement , resistance and persecution in Austria during the times of Austro-Fascism and National Socialism , Nazi medical crimes, euthanasia , Action T4 , documentation of child euthanasia in the Vienna Nazi facility Spiegelgrund as well as right-wing extremism after 1945 and the role of the FPÖ and the Alliance Future Austria under the chairmanship of Jörg Haider . Current research deals with the history of the Nazi justice system. The courses and the diploma theses and dissertations supervised by him at the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Vienna also deal with these thematic areas .

He was part of the editorial team of fundamental DÖW works on right-wing extremism in Austria such as right-wing extremism in Austria after 1945 (5th edition 1981) and the Handbook of Austrian Right-Wing Extremism (2nd edition 1993, new edition 1994).
