Wolfgang Rother (born May 23, 1955 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German philosopher and historian of philosophy living in Switzerland .

Life

After graduating from high school at Engelbert-von-Berg-Gymnasium , Wipperfürth , Wolfgang Rother studied Protestant theology, philosophy and German linguistics and literature as well as general didactics, specialist didactics and educational psychology at the universities of Marburg , Tübingen and Zurich . In 1978 he graduated with a licentiate in Zurich, obtained the grammar school teacher diploma in the same year and received his doctorate in 1980 in Zurich. From 1978 to 1983 he was a research assistant at the Philosophical Department of the University of Zurich; In 1981/82 he taught philosophy at the Lucerne Cantonal School. From 1982 to 2011 he was lecturer for philosophy, from 2012 to 2016 publishing director for the philosophy, antiquity, literature and musicology program at Schwabe Verlag .

In 1999/2000 he headed the research project “The Philosophy of the Enlightenment in Northern Italy” and from 2006 to 2008 the research project “Political Philosophy in the German Enlightenment”. In 2004 he completed his habilitation in Zurich and in 2011 was appointed titular professorship for philosophy with a special focus on the history of philosophy. In 2016 he taught as professor invitato at the Istituto di Studi Filosofici of the Facoltà di Teologia di Lugano . Since 2016 he has been a project partner in the research project “Metaphysics and Ontology in Switzerland in the Age of the Reformation (1519-1648)” at the University of Lucerne .

Rother is also a scientific advisor to the Swiss Association of Publishers for the Humanities and Social Sciences / Association suisse des éditeurs de sciences humaines et sociales and President of the Philosophical Society Zurich.

In addition to his research on the history of philosophy and ideas in the modern era, in particular on the Italian and German Enlightenment, hedonism and the philosophy of criminal law, Rother is known as co-editor of the Outline of the History of Philosophy . To this work he contributed essential parts of the philosophy of the 18th century. He founded several scientific book series and is a member of the scientific advisory board of various editions and journals.
