Coordinates: 34 ° 25 ′ S , 150 ° 53 ′ E The City of Wollongong is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 684.0 km² and has about 203,000 inhabitants.
Wollongong is located on the state's Pacific coast in the Illawarra region about 80 km south of the metropolis of Sydney . The area comprises 138 hamlets and villages, including Austinmer, Balgownie, Bellambi, Berkeley, Brownsville, Bulli, Clifton, Coalcliff, Coledale, Coniston, Cordeaux Heights, Corrimal, Cringila, Dapto, Fairy Meadow, Farmborough Heights, Figtree, Gwynneville, Horsley, Kanahooka, Keiraville, Kemblawarra, Koonawarra, Lake Heights, Mangerton, Mount Keira, Mount Kembla, Mount Ousley, Mount Pleasant , Mount Saint Thomas, Penrose, Port Kembla , Primbee, Scarborough, Stanwell Park , Thirroul, Towradgi, Unanderra, Warrawong, Windang , Wollongong , North Wollongong, West Wollongong, Wombarra, Woonona and Yallah. The City Council is located in the Wollongong district.

The Wollongong City Council has 13 members who are elected by LGA residents. Two members each come from wards 1 to 6, the chairman and mayor are also elected by all residents of the LGA. The six electoral districts are determined independently of the localities.
