Xavier Le Roy (* 1963 in Juvisy-sur-Orge ) is a French dancer , choreographer , performance artist and university lecturer.

life and work

Xavier Le Roy graduated from the University of Montpellier with a degree in molecular biology and then received his doctorate . Since 1988 he has dedicated himself to dance. From 1991 to 1995 he joined the Compagnie del 'Alambic in Paris and has since worked as a dancer and choreographer. He was artist in residence several times . Conceptual rigor, discursive spirit of research and subtle humor characterize his pieces.

His solo works Self Unfinished (1998) and Product of Circumstances (1999) have toured continuously since their creation. Self Unfinished made Le Roy known internationally. He shows configurations of the body that were previously not seen in dance: an experimental set-up like in a laboratory, in a white room with bright neon light, in which the performer's body is in an incessant state of metamorphosis and generates body images that are sometimes remind of amphibious beings or insects.

Xavier Le Roy works with various dancers and choreographers, including Alexander Birntraum, Mårten Spångberg, Meg Stuart , Christine De Smedt, David Hernandez, Yvonne Rainer and Bojana Cvéjic. In 2015 he performed the piece Excerpts of Low Pieces and Title in Process together with Scarlet Yu (* 1978, Hong Kong) at the Biennale di Venezia .

Since May 2018, Le Roy has been Heiner Goebbels' successor as Professor of Applied Theater Studies with a focus on the practice of performative arts at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.
