Yancheng ( 盐城市 , Yánchéng Shì ) is a district-free city in the northeast of the Chinese province of Jiangsu .

geography

In 2007 the urban districts of the city with 1720 square kilometers had 1,526,400, the entire administrative area of ​​Yancheng had almost 8 million inhabitants. Close to the city is the Yancheng Nature Reserve , where the David deer, which was once extinct in China, was released back into the wild.

The city is the southern end point of the new Qingdao – Yancheng line , which went into operation on December 26, 2018.

Industrial accident

In mid-March 2019, a fire and explosion broke out at a fertilizer plant on the Yancheng industrial estate, triggering a 2.2 magnitude earthquake and collapsing several buildings. On March 22, Die Zeit reported 47 deaths, 640 injured people were treated in hospitals, many of them with cuts, 90 people are seriously injured. The ORF reported on March 30th with 78 deaths for the accident with a major fire in the chemical plant.
