Yellowstone National Forest

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Yellowstone National Forest is a former National Forest of the United States , the first on 30th March 1891 as Yellowstone Park Timberland Reserve with an area of square kilometers 5,014.2 was set up. On May 22, 1902 , it was expanded to the Yellowstone Forest Reserve on 26,632 km² . The Yellowstone National Forest is considered the first US national forest.

The establishment of the reserve was first proposed by General Philip Sheridan in 1882 after a visit to Yellowstone National Park . Sheridan recommended expanding the park 40 miles to the east and 10 miles to the south. Senator George Graham Vest introduced a law to this effect, but it was blocked by the local opposition. The American Forestry Association looked into the matter and prepared a new law that would allow the President of the United States to set aside land and designate it as a "forest reserve." President Benjamin Harrison then proclaimed the reservation on March 30, 1891 , largely following Sheridan's recommendations. Some areas in the northeastern part of the designated reserve have been excluded to allow mining in the headwaters of the Clark Fork River . The country was the first US national forest . It was initially under the same military administration as Yellowstone National Park.

In 1902 areas were exchanged with the Teton Forest Reserve and the reserve was placed under civilian administration. The first national ranger station was set up at Wapiti on the Shoshone River .

On January 9, 1903 , the now renamed Yellowstone Forest Reserve was merged with the Absaroka Forest Reserve and the Teton Forest Reserve, which together formed the Yellowstone National Forest on March 4, 1907 . In 1905, all state forests were placed under the direction of the US Forest Service . As a result of a major reorganization, the area was dissolved on July 1, 1908 and divided into the Targhee , Teton , Wyoming , Bonneville , Absaroka , Shoshone and Beartooth National Forests .
