Yves Mersch (born October 1, 1949 in Luxembourg ) is a Luxembourg lawyer and bank manager. From 1998 to 2012, he was President of the Central Bank of Luxembourg . He has been a member of the Executive Board of the ECB since December 2012 .

Life

Mersch studied international law at the Sorbonne in Paris and is a member of the Luxembourg bar. He is married and has two children.

On March 19, 2008, Mersch reprimanded the banks for their inadequate risk management , but adopted a softer tone about the future development of the European economy as a whole. In June 2012 he was supposed to succeed González-Páramo as a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, but the European Parliament prevented his appointment for six months in order to keep the position open for a woman. In November 2012, the European Council appointed Mersch, contrary to a non-binding vote by Parliament, to the Board of Directors of the European Central Bank on December 15, 2012. His term of office is eight years.

Together with the Portuguese ECB Vice-President Vítor Constâncio , he took over responsibility for the Banking Union project in December 2012 , one of the most important projects in the history of the ECB.
