Yves Piat (* 1973 in Tourcoing ) is a French film director .

Life

As a child, Piat was interested in drawing and originally wanted to be a comic artist. At the age of 16 he came to film as assistant to the animator Joël Tasset and then worked as a set designer and studio manager at the Fouillet Wieber film studio.

Piat made his directorial debut in 2001 with the short film Tempus fugit , whose leading roles he cast with Cyrille Thouvenin and Maurice Garrel . Tempus fugit was shown in competition at the Odense Film Festival. Piat then began working on his first feature-length film, but had to abruptly end the project after five years because the production company went bankrupt. Piat withdrew from the film business, founded a company and worked as a graphic artist and web designer.

It was not until the mid-2010s that he turned to film again and released the short film The Last Moonwalk in 2016 , which was shown at the Festival du Court-Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand , among others . His screenplay for the next short film Nefta Football Club won the 2017 Premiers Plans d'Angers script competition, which helped fund the short film. Released in 2019, the film about two children and a misdirected drug delivery on the border between Tunisia and Algeria won numerous international film awards, including the Audience Award of the Festival du Court-Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand and the Grand Prix in the field of short film of the Festival du film de Sarlat. Nefta Football Club was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best short film in 2020 and received a César nomination in the category of best short film .
