Zakaria Tamer

Zakaria Tamer ( Arabic زكريا تامر; * 1931 in Damascus ), also known by the spelling Sakarija Tamer , is a Syrian writer . He is one of the old masters of Arabic short stories and is probably one of the most influential Arabic prose authors of all.

At thirteen, Tamer had to leave school early and worked as a blacksmith to help his family. He started writing in 1958. His first book was published in 1960 and made him famous in one fell swoop.

From 1969 to 1981 he worked first in the Syrian Ministry of Culture, later in the Ministry of Information and then as head of the drama department at Syrian television. Zakaria Tamer left Syria in 1981 and has since lived in Great Britain as a writer and journalist for Arabic newspapers and magazines as well as a children's magazine. In 1987 the volume of short stories Spring in the Ashes was published by Lenos-Verlag . His work includes numerous collections of short stories and some children's books.
