Zdeněk Jarkovský (born October 3, 1918 in Neubidschow , then Austria-Hungary ; † November 8, 1948 over the English Channel ) was a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper . With the Czechoslovak national team he won the silver medal at the Olympic Winter Games in 1948 and the gold medal at the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1947 .

Career

Zdeněk Jarkovský began his career in his hometown with SK Nový Bydžov . In the late 1930s he moved to Prague to study there. After the closure of all Czech universities by the German occupiers in 1939, he played for HO Karlín , where his university team was staying. At a tournament shortly before Christmas 1939 he was discovered by players of the I. ČLTK Prague , whose goalkeeper Jiří Hertl had previously switched to city rivals LTC Prague .

From 1940 he played for the I. ČLTK and won the championship of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia with this in 1941 . After the end of World War II, he was runner-up three times, each behind the LTC.

He was also active in the Czechoslovak national team and made his debut for Czechoslovakia in a game against Switzerland on January 19, 1946. At the World Cup in Prague in 1947 he was used in a game and became world champion. A year later, at the 1948 Winter Olympics, it was used twice and won the silver medal. In total he came to seven internationals for Czechoslovakia.

Jarkovský died in a flight accident over the English Channel in 1948 when he was traveling to London with five other players . The chartered Beechcraft 18 small aircraft of the Escadrille Mercure Taxis Aeriens ( aircraft registration F-BGAF ) had an accident in adverse weather in the English Channel, with the two crew members also perishing in addition to these six passengers.
