Zelarino is a district of Venice in the Municipalità Chirignago -Zelarino on the mainland , which is located in the extreme northwest of the municipality, in the northwest of Mestre . Zelarino is located about 17 km from the historic center of Venice on State Road 245, which runs roughly parallel to the Marzenego , the largest river in the region.

On September 18, 2009 the district had 5,208 inhabitants.

Zelarino is home to Mestre's new hospital, the Ospedale dell'Angelo , which opened in 2008 and which replaced the hospital in the city center.

history

The older place name Cilarino appears for the first time in August 1006 in a deed of donation from the Venetian monastery of San Zaccaria . The rin part of the name could be a local variant of rio , which means the name would mean place on the canal. It may also be based on a Germanic word for wood, which would indicate a forest. According to Dante Olivieri, on the other hand, the name goes back to cella , which could indicate both a chapel and a territorial unit.

The parish church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and Saint Vigilius of Trento (San Vigilio) was built in the 12th century. It is possible that the veneration of this saint from Trient , who is mainly represented in Tyrol , goes back to the presence of servants from the empire . In any case, they built a pilgrims' hospice in the 14th century, which was expanded in 1746 and 1851. In 1851 the bell tower was also rebuilt. After the severe earthquake in 1976 , the building was restored and expanded. It was restored again by 2008.

In 1331, Johann von Luxemburg , the son of Henry VII , elevated the member of the important Foscari aristocratic family , Nicolò Foscari , to Count di Zelarino , Count of Zelarino. His vassal property comprised 400 campi . The title lasted until the 18th century.

In the Venetian era, which ended in 1797, several villas were built in the region , including the heavily dilapidated Villa Barbarich-Pezzana-Fraccaro in the 16th century, Villa Sardi in the second half of the 17th century, and the villa on the road to Venice Lin-Tagliacozzo before 1781 and the Villa Biasiotto-Parolari-Mar from the late 18th century. The Villa Zino-Visinoni was added in the 19th century.

In the wake of the Napoleonic occupation, which was followed by the Austrian one until 1866 , Zelarino became a commune in the Mestre district . When the fascists reorganized it in 1926, Zelarino became part of the greater Venice municipality. The last mayor was Ottaviano Ried, who has been commemorated by a street since 1975.
