Zellhausen is a district of Mainhausen , a municipality in the Offenbach district in southern Hesse, near Aschaffenburg .

history

Old Town Hall

In the 7th century, the outlying cell church , which was consecrated to St. George , was probably a mission station for Irish-Scottish missionaries. The fortifications surrounding the church were probably abandoned in the 13th century. The church existed until 1816.

The Schlösschen house is connected to a nearby desert, the Zellerhof . Both settlements burned down in the Middle Ages. According to legend, the residents of the Zellerhof and those of the houses in Schlösschen built a new settlement, using the names of both previous villages when giving their names. This is how Zellhausen arose, and 1329 is documented as "Cellhusen". The "Husen" settlement, which is connected to the castle, was first mentioned in 1238. Excavations carried out in 1829 uncovered foundations and pavement. It could have been a fortified tower with surrounding buildings.

In 1329 the place was first mentioned as Celhusen . The Seligenstadt monastery owns two farms here.

1791, the community broke through the payment of 250 guilders to the rulers, the Archbishop and Elector of Mainz , the serfdom from.

After secularization in 1803, Zellhausen von Kurmainz came to Hesse. It was not until 1874 that the (arch) diocese of Mainz granted the place the status of its own parish. After the previous branch church from 1783 had become too small, the necessary financial resources were raised at the beginning of the 20th century to build their own parish church in 1903 , which was consecrated to St. Wendelinus in 1904 after completion . On October 1, 1908, the Zellhausen stop at the Odenwaldbahn was put into operation, in 1931 the staff withdrew and replaced by a railway agency .

Air raids on Zellhausen airfield in 1944 also caused severe damage to the town.

Territorial reform

On January 1, 1977, as part of the regional reform in Hesse , Zellhausen was merged with the neighboring town of Mainflingen by state law to form the new municipality of Mainhausen .

Population development

In 1834 Zellhausen only had 702 inhabitants, in 1939 there were already 1739 and then in 1961 2587 inhabitants. In 1970, seven years before the merger with Mainflingen, the place had 3420 inhabitants. As of December 31, 2003, 5104 inhabitants were registered. Zellhausen had 5058 inhabitants on June 30, 2008.
