Central archive of the international art trade

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Central Archive of the International Art Trade ( ZADIK ), today (2019) Central Archive for German and International Art Market Research eV - Research Archive at the University of Cologne, is a Cologne- based institution for the preservation, indexing and research of the archives of important galleries, art dealers and art critics , Curators, collectors and professional photographers.

History and sponsorship

Due to the lack of an archive specializing in this subject, the various working documents of the art trade were destroyed, forgotten, scattered or at best sold abroad for decades. Since “there was a risk that further holdings could be lost through ignorance because there was no place of preservation for them”, the Federal Association of German Galleries (BVDG) decided at its meeting on November 14, 1991 to establish a central archive, the on May 25, 1992. The founding fathers were Gerhard F. Reinz , who organized start-up funding from the federal government as part of the Bonn-Berlin Compensation , Rudolf Zwirner and Hein Stünke from the Der Spiegel gallery , who also contributed the first foundations. The archive has the legal form of a registered non-profit association.

The BVDG cannot finance the ZADIK alone. The first cooperation partners were the city of Bonn and the art and exhibition hall of the Federal Republic of Germany , making Bonn the first seat of ZADIK. Rudolf Zwirner was appointed by the board as the first head of ZADIK. In 2001, the Bonn financing of the ZADIK through the compensation agreement under the Berlin / Bonn Act expired . As a cooperation partner, the SK Stiftung Kultur of Sparkasse KölnBonn has provided by far the largest part of the ZADIK's funding since 2001 . The city of Cologne is also involved in the ongoing financing.

ZADIK has been based in Cologne since 2001, and since 2007 in the house of the SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne's Mediapark . Individual projects have been and are funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media , the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Rhineland Regional Association , the NRW Art Foundation , the cultural work of VG Bild-Kunst Bonn, Art Cologne / Koelnmesse and private galleries. Through a cooperation agreement with the University of Cologne from December 2014, the ZADIK became an affiliated institute of the university with the name Research Archive at the University of Cologne . Part of this collaboration is the master’s degree in art history and the art market , which is headed by junior professor Nadine Oberste-Hetbleck.

The scientific director of ZADIK, Günter Herzog, received the Art Cologne Prize in 2017.

tasks

The ZADIK collects and preserves the archives of important galleries and art dealers, especially their business and artist correspondence, as well as all materials that provide information about the gallery operation, its exhibition and public relations work and its work with the artists. In addition, ZADIK also collects personal papers and bequests from art critics, collectors and specialist photographers. The aim of the work of ZADIK is also to “document and research the formative and formative influences of the art trade on international art development and its complex role in the field of art education. In this way, the ZADIK wants to contribute to integrating the history of the art trade into general art history. ”The collected holdings should not only be opened up, but also researched and made available to others for research - more and more online.

activity

So far, 49 articles from the central archive of the international art trade have reported in the art market section of the FAZ .

meaning

To this day, the ZADIK is the world's only specialist scientific archive on the history of the art trade. So far there is only one related institution which, if not mainly, collects gallery archives in a comparable concentration and in a similar systematic manner, namely the 'Archives of American Art', founded in 1954 in the 'Smithsonian Institution' in Washington, DC with its' Collection of Gallery Records'. In addition to the archives of artists, collectors, critics, curators and others active in the art system, only the archives of American galleries are collected there. The Getty Institute in Los Angeles , founded in 1980, currently has 16 archives of galleries and art dealers in its 'Special Collections' with a total of 265 holdings.
