The Central Park for Culture and Leisure ( Russian Центральный парк культуры и отдыха ; Kazakh Орталық мәдениет және демалыс паркі ) is a park in the Kazakh city ​​of Almaty . The over 100 hectare park was established as a state garden in 1856. It is located in the Medeu district in the east of the city.

The park is home to more than 2000 species of plants . There are several rides , an aqua park, man-made ponds and the Spartak Stadium.

history

The history of the park goes back to the creation of the city of Almaty. Mainly vegetables and fruits were grown in the garden . From 1869 to 1875 the garden at that time was expanded to include a greenhouse and a few flower gardens, and a tree nursery was also founded.

With the rapid development of Almaty, which was only founded in 1854, the park became a place of recreation for the residents. Numerous events and festivals were held.

During the Russian Revolution of 1905 , workers' meetings and rallies were held in the park.

In 1934 the park was renovated. The city's zoo was established in the eastern part of the park. A year later it was named after the Russian writer Maxim Gorky , in whose honor a monument was erected in the park in 1940.

Already in the years 1951 to 1952 there were numerous recreational and entertainment possibilities in the park. Among other things, there was a cinema , several leisure facilities as well as fountains and sculptures. In 1952 the park got a pioneer railway .

The park was renamed Central Park for Culture and Leisure in 1990. In 2004 the park was sold by Viktor Chrapunowym, the then Äkim of Almaty, to the private trading and finance company "Altyn Taras".
