The Center for Democracy Aarau ( ZDA ) is an academic research institute in Aarau . It deals with basic research and teaching in the field of democracy . The sponsorship consists of the University of Zurich , the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland , the City of Aarau and the Canton of Aargau . The ZDA is based in Villa Blumenhalde . It comprises the departments: General Democracy Research (ADF), Center for Research on Direct Democracy (c2d) and Center for Political Education and History Didactics (PBGD).

The ZDA was founded in January 2009. It is housed in the Villa Blumenhalde , which was built in 1817/18 according to plans by the democracy pioneer Heinrich Zschokke . Politician, philosopher and bestselling author Zschokke played a key role in founding modern Switzerland and building up the canton of Aargau. He lived with his large family until his death in 1848 in the Villa Blumenhalde. In 1959 the local community of Aarau acquired the classicist building. In 1989/90 it became a training center for district school teachers (didactic).

The main task of the ZDA is the scientific research into questions of democracy. The following research areas are exemplary of the range of topics:

The ZDA also operates the Democracy Barometer, an online database on referendums, a database of Swiss elections and votes, and the Political Education platform, which offers teachers materials, information and suggestions for teaching political education.
