Zeta Reticuli is the name for a binary star system in the constellation network .
The angular distance between the two stars is 310 ″ ( arcseconds ), which is roughly one sixth of the full moon diameter. This means that Zeta Reticuli, like Mizar and Alkor , can be separated with the naked eye. This angular distance corresponds to a distance of about 3,750 AU .
Zeta 1 Reticuli belongs to the spectral class G2.5 V and has an apparent magnitude of 5.54 mag. Zeta 2 Reticuli has a brightness of 5.24 mag and belongs to the spectral class G1V. The stars are about 12.1 parsecs (about 39.5 light years ) from Earth.
The system is part of the Zeta Herculis movement cluster .
Entrance into pop culture
Zeta Reticuli became famous in the abduction story of Betty and Barney Hill , in which a star map hand-drawn by Betty Hill is supposed to show the place of origin of the alien abductors. So the hypothesis arose that an alien species known as Grays could have originated from Zeta Reticuli.
The planetary system of Zeta 2 Reticuli is in the science fiction films Alien - The uncanny creature from a strange world , Aliens - The return and Prometheus - Dark characters the scene of the action.
