Zheng Zhi ( Chinese  郑智 , Pinyin Zhèng Zhì , born August 20, 1980 in Shenyang ) is a Chinese football player . He has been playing for Guangzhou Evergrande since 2010 and is currently the captain of the Chinese national team .

Club career

Zheng began his career at Liaoling Chuangye before joining the Shenzhen Jianlibao squad in 2001. In its first season, the club was fifth in the top Chinese division. After the runner-up title in 2002, where Zheng was Chinese footballer of the year for the first time and fourth place in 2003, the championship title was won in the newly created Super League in 2004.

In 2005, Zheng moved to league rivals Shandong Luneng Taishan . It reached 3rd place at the end of the first season. In 2006 the midfielder celebrated his second league title, at the same time the trophy was won and as an encore, Zheng was Chinese footballer of the year for the second time.

During the winter break of 2006/07, the Chinese moved to Europe and signed on loan with the then English first division club Charlton Athletic . The club was relegated in 19th place, four points were missing to save the bank. Because of good performance he was then committed by the Addicks and in the following season in the Football League Championship , eleventh place could be achieved. In the 2008/09 season he had to go with Charlton to the third highest division in England. The club was relegated last from the second division.

He was then signed by Celtic Glasgow . For the Scots, he made his debut at the Old Firm against Glasgow Rangers when he pulled out the penalty to make it 2-1. However, the game also ended 1: 2.

National team

He took part in the Asia Cup in 2004 in his native China. He was used in all group games, where he scored the intermittent 1-1 equalizer against Bahrain . In the quarterfinals he was able to shoot his team into the semifinals with two goals against Iraq . There Iran was eliminated on penalties, Zheng was able to convert a penalty. In the final against Japan , Zheng played through, but could not prevent the 1: 3 defeat. Overall, he was on the field in all six games of the Chinese and scored three goals.

At the Asia Cup 2007 in Indonesia , Malaysia , Thailand and Vietnam , Zheng was used in two group matches, where he received a yellow card in both. China was eliminated in the group stage as third behind Iran and Uzbekistan .

In 2008 he took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing . Zheng was used in the group matches against New Zealand and Belgium . In the group game against the Belgians, he saw the red card in the 64th minute. China left the group as third. Zheng is currently the captain of the national team.
