Zhubei , also Jhubei or Chupei ( Chinese 竹北 市 , Pinyin Zhúběi Shì , Tongyong Pinyin Jhúběi Shìh , W.-G. Chu-pei Shih , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Tek-pak-chhī ), is a city in the northwest of the Republic of China in Taiwan . It is the capital of the district of Hsinchu and with 181,955 inhabitants (December 2017) its largest city. Zhubei is strongly characterized by urban planning and is a newly developed urban center between Hsinchu in the south and Taoyuan in the north. Due to the direct connection to the new train station of the Taiwan High Speed Rail and very modern (residential) infrastructure, it is popular as a residential area for the wealthy classes from the Hsinchu Science Park and also attractive as a residential area for commuters to Taipei and Taichung . The population is growing accordingly (2003: 100,000; 2009: 137,000; 2013: 156,000).
location
Zhubei is located north of the independent city of Hsinchu , which is also reflected in the name of the city, which is composed of 竹 , zhú - "bamboo" as the second syllable of Hsinchu ( 新竹 , Xīnzhú ) and 北 , běi - "north". The urban area, located in the estuary of the Fengshan and Touqian rivers , extends from the Formosa Strait in the west about 15 km inland and rises slightly. The north-south extension is a good 4 km.
The city has a connection to Highway 1, Taiwan's most important north-south traffic axis, and a conventional railway station. In addition, Taiwan High Speed Rail's Hsinchu Station is located to the east of the Zhubei metropolitan area.
