The Zinkenbach is a brook from the Osterhorn group to the Wolfgangsee near Sankt Gilgen and Strobl in the Salzburger Salzkammergut .

Run and landscape

The creek forms between Breitenberg  ( 1260  m above sea level. A. ) west, Zinkeneck ( 1440  m above sea level. A. ) on Osterhorn south and Wieslerhorn  ( 1602  m above sea level. A. ) east, the cry Bach case , at 639  m above sea level. A. It arises from the confluence of the Königsbach , its left main course, which drains between Breitenberg and Osterhorn, with the Schreinbach from the basin between Osternhorn, Postalm and Wieslerhorn. Shortly afterwards, the Weißrießbach flows from the right, which rises between Wieslerhorn and Windkogel  ( 1557  m above sea level ) at the Postalm. The Zinkenbach runs north-east in a deep ditch, from below Vitz am Berg northwards.

Then after a good 3 kilometers of its run, at the confluence of the stone trench , it hits a hook to the east and breaks out of the mountains into the Wolfgang valley . Here is the place Abersee (formerly called Zinkenbach). As a result, it forms the extensive alluvial fan , which - together with that of the Dillbach from the Schafberg opposite - narrows the Wolfgangsee to less than 250 meters wide and divides it into two parts, the St. Gilgener Obersee and the St-Wolfgang- Strobler Untersee. The stream runs through this Zinkenbach peninsula northeast.

At 558  m above sea level A. crosses Wolfgangsee Straße  (B158) the brook, Langgassen follows on the left , houses von Gschwendt on the right , then Reith on the left and Forsthub on the right . After almost 6.5 kilometers, the Zinkenbach flows into the lake opposite St. Wolfgang , which is 538  m above sea level. A. lies.

The entire length of the stream forms the municipal boundary between St. Gilgen and Strobl. It takes its name from the Hohe Zinken  ( 1764  m above sea level ) southwest of the Osterhorn.

Hydrography and Nature

The Zinkenbach is the main feeder of the lake, it is over 20 meters wide in the lower reaches, but often falls dry there in summer because it seeps into the subsoil, and forms a scree area similar to the northern Italian torrentes . The stream swells very quickly as a torrent when it rains and transports large amounts of debris during floods . Its confluence, the Zinkenbach peninsula , is gradually pushed into the lake, which is only 20 m deep at its narrow point. The stream is secured with a number of torrent barriers, which were brought to a new technical-ecological level around 2013.

The lower reaches of the landscape protection area Schafberg – Salzkammergutseen  (LSG 46). At Abersee there is an arboretum right by the stream . The Natura 2000 area Zinkenbach-Karlgraben is located in the headwaters of the Königsbach.
