ZombiU is a survival horror - video game by Ubisoft Montpellier , which exclusively for Nintendo at that time on November 18, 2012 current game console Wii U was released. It was a launch title for the console and was offered in special console and game bundles . In the game, the player can take on the roles of various survivors of a zombie apocalypse. It is a new edition of Ubisoft's first commercial title Zombi from 1986. On August 18, 2015, the game was also released for the PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Windows under the title Zombi .

Gameplay

control

The game is mostly operated with the GamePad newly developed for the Wii U , whose touch screen is incorporated into the game by the game developers as a supporting game element. While the actual course of the game and the fighting are shown on the TV, the touch display on the GamePad controller provides additional information. This includes the current map of the area with your own location and the destination of the next mission. The GamePad is also used to scan the environment, to unlock doors and locks and to browse and manage the inventory in the backpack or to select the current weapon.

Single player mode

The player controls a random character who is called a survivor in the game . The player's task is to survive as long as possible during a zombie apocalypse in London . Since the game is not paused here, a corresponding tactical approach is necessary in order not to be killed. There are various weapons available when fighting the zombies, such as a bat, various pistols and rifles, a crossbow or mines and Molotov cocktails . Just like the ammunition that goes with them, they have to be found and collected at different locations in the game. As a last resort, in the event of direct contact with a zombie, a syringe that is immediately fatal to the zombie helps. However, this is only available to a limited extent and only one can be worn. Each character only has one life and can be killed with one bite. In doing so, the player loses his backpack with all its inventory. However, he can regain it by finding and killing his old character that has mutated into a zombie with the next survivor . Otherwise the equipment will have to be collected again. During the storyline, the player is guided through different locations in London. As a hometown, the safehouse in a subway station is always the starting point of every new survivor . From there, the player can see the monitors of the other locations, provided that he has activated the CCTV distributors of the cameras at the corresponding locations during the game . There is also a chest in the safe house, in which equipment can be temporarily stored. From the safe house you are sent to various missions. Parts of the story take place in the London Underground, in Buckingham Palace or in the Tower of London . The sewer system is available as a fast travel system. Manhole covers can be opened at different locations in order to travel to another location from there immediately.

Online mode

There is an online mode for ZombiU , which only has limited options. Single players can leave messages on the walls for other players. These messages are displayed to the other single players in the online mode in the same place. In addition, the characters of other players who have died or have mutated into zombies are visible and - with the exception of weapons - their items can be looted.

Multiplayer mode

In multiplayer mode, two players compete against each other in a human versus zombie fight. One player controls the survivor with a classic Wii or the Wii-U-Pro controller, the other player controls the king of zombies with the help of the Wii-U GamePad.

development

The project started at Ubisoft Montpellier in early 2010 and was intended for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 . During the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2011 in Los Angeles, ZombiU was announced under the title Killer Freaks from Outer Space and was based on Ubisoft's Rabbids franchise at the time. It was originally intended as a technology demo for the Wii U. In the next time the opponents developed from aliens to zombies and the game atmosphere became more serious and scary. At E3 2012, the change to ZombiU was finally announced. As a composer for the soundtrack of the already games like was God of War and Mass Effect known Cris Velasco committed. In mid-2015, Ubisoft officially announced a port for the PC, the PS4 and XBOX ONE under the name Zombi. This has been available since August 18, 2015. In a graphics comparison video you can see the changes to the Wii U version more closely.

Sales success

ZombiU had sold around 870,000 times as of July 4, 2015.

In an interview for the online magazine Gamesindustry.biz in July 2013, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot described the title as "not nearly profitable", although it was one of the most popular launch titles for the Wii U. Mainly he blamed the console's weak sales figures. Ubisoft therefore have "neither plans nor interest" in continuing. The failure of ZombiU ultimately prompted the group to also publish Rayman Legends , which was originally planned as an exclusive title for Wii U , for other platforms.

At the end of March 2015 it was announced that a second part was in development but not completed. A co-op mode was planned as one of the innovations.
