The Zoological Museum of the City of Strasbourg ( Musée zoologique de la ville de Strasbourg ) houses the scientific collection in the field of zoology for the city of Strasbourg in Alsace . The museum is from the University of Strasbourg manages and is located in a 1890-1893 by the architect Otto Warth in the style of Neo-Renaissance building dating from the field of historical, founded in 1872 Kaiser-Wilhelm University.

The basis of the rich collection, from which only a selection can be shown, is the natural history cabinet of the polymath Johann Hermann , which also contains the holotype of the Greek tortoise .

The holdings were initially kept in premises not far from St. Thomas Church. The collection grew steadily under the successors of Professors Louis Georges Duvernoy , Dominique Auguste Lereboullet and Wilhelm Philipp Schimper . After the Franco-Prussian War , the annexation of Alsace to the German Empire and the re-establishment of the university, the new building was decided. During this time the museum was headed by Ludwig Döderlein , who in turn contributed a lot to the growth of the collection and its scientific reputation. Part of the collection was destroyed by British and American bombings in 1944, but numerous new purchases and donations from private collectors (especially in 1970, 1980, 1986, 1993 and 2002) made it possible to restore one of the richest holdings in France.

In 2009 the outer walls of the museum were renovated and the roof was newly covered. The beige-brown stone used by Otto Warth had turned black-brown over time. In 2010 the renovation work also continued inside. The monumental staircase had already been completely repainted and furnished in the 1990s.
