Reconstruction of a slide trumpet

The slide trumpet is a chromatic trumpet from the 17th century, the tube of which can be lengthened similar to that of a trombone to enable continuous intonation . The extension of the insert sleeve of the mouthpiece is used for this purpose. With the right hand the tube of the instrument is pulled over the sleeve, while the left hand fixes the mouthpiece. By means of the pull, a variation of the tone by 3 semitones could be achieved. The slide trumpet only lost its importance with the introduction of the valve in wind instrument making.

The slide trumpet , a further development from the 19th century, can be intoned with a crooked bow and is therefore referred to in German as the soprano trombone .
