Second Bible of Charles the Bald
The so-called Second Bible of Charles the Bald is a Carolingian illuminated manuscript that was created between 871 and 873 in the monastery of Saint-Amand . The common name separates the manuscript from the stylistically completely different Vivian Bible , also known as the “First Bible of Charles the Bald” .
The book decoration of the Bible is a major work of the so-called Franco-Saxon (i.e. Anglo-Saxon) school, which is strongly influenced by insular illumination . This had developed in what is now northern France in the 9th century and differed significantly from courtly Carolingian book illumination.
The codex comprises 440 sheets of parchment , its format is 430 x 335 mm. Today it is in the Paris Bibliothèque nationale (Ms. Lat. 2).
