Season overview:
cyclone season in the North Indies 2007

Cyclone Sidr ( JTWC designation 06B , IMD designation Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Sidr ) was the fourth named storm of the cyclone season in the North Indian 2007 . The storm formed in the middle of the Bay of Bengal in November 2007 and quickly peaked with winds of 215 km / h (equivalent to a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. The storm wreaked havoc in Bangladesh At least 3,447 people were killed in the effects of the storm, the government estimates that 773,000 houses were damaged, 250,000 head of livestock and poultry died, and crops were destroyed in large areas.

Schematic detailed map

On November 9th, south-east of the Andamans, a weather disturbance with weak circulation developed near the Nicobar Islands . Wind shear at heights initially hindered development, although strong flow division promoted the formation of convection . Vertical wind shears largely decreased as the circulation center became better defined, and a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert was issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) on November 11 when the system was just south of the Andaman Islands. Around the same time, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) classified the system as low pressure BOB 09. The JTWC upgraded the low pressure area to Tropical Cyclone 06B after Dvorak estimates showed winds of 65 km / h.

On the morning of November 12, the IMD declared the system to be cyclonic storm Sidr. This began to intensify rapidly as it slowly moved north-westerly. During the day the IMD increased the intensity of the storm to a severe cyclonic storm and early the next day to a very severe cyclonic storm. On the morning of November 15, Sidr reached its peak with peak wind speeds of 215 km / h (according to the IMD, according to the JTWC, the constant winds were 250 km / h.) The BBC had spread that Sidr had the strength of a category 5 hurricane, but this information is incorrect as 215 km / h corresponds to category 4. Sidr reached the mainland at around 17:00 UTC , with sustained winds of 215 km / h. The cyclone weakened rapidly over land and the last warnings were issued in the early hours of November 16. The name of the storm, Sidr, had been suggested by Oman . It is the Arabic name of a tree, the Ziziphus spina-christi , which belongs to the buckthorn family. According to another interpretation, the name is derived from the Sinhalese language , in which Sidr means "hole" or "eye".

Preparations

When Sidr intensified into a cyclone equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane on November 15, thousands of relief workers in India and Bangladesh were on standby before the storm hit. Low-lying coastal areas have been evacuated. A total of two million people were taken to emergency shelters in Bangladesh. The IMD also issued warnings for Orissa and West Bengal on November 14th . More than 40,000 Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers helped residents in the 15 affected provinces during the evacuation. The main ports were closed.

Effects

The remains of Zyklon Sidr.

The coastal areas of Bangladesh saw heavy rainfall from the cyclone. Strong, gusty winds occurred in Dhaka and other parts of the country. The total damage from the storm approached $ 450 million .

The tidal waves reached the coast north of Chennai in the north of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu up to 3 m above normal and caused panic among the residents.

The damage was extensive in Bangladesh. Huts were destroyed, houses and schools blown away. Local authorities have described the damage as even more serious than the 1991 Bangladesh cyclone . The districts of Patuakhali , Barguna and the Jhalokathi were hit by a storm surge more than five meters high. About a quarter of the Sundarbans World Heritage Site was damaged. According to experts, it will take the mangroves more than forty years to recover from this disaster. Much of the capital, Dhaka , has been hit by blackouts and water disruptions, and has suffered significant damage from wind and flooding. The agriculture was largely destroyed and the rice fields with a crop lost.

At least 3,447 people were killed. Local authorities reported 423 fatalities in the hardest-hit district of Barguna. In Patuakhali, which also suffered severe damage, 385 people were killed. Most of these deaths are related to the winds. The head of the Red Crescent in Bangladesh expected up to 10,000 people to have fallen victim to the cyclone. More than 3000 fishermen on more than 500 fishing boats were considered missing.

Relief efforts

Devastation in Bangladesh, November 27, 2007

After the storm, five ships from the Bangladesh Navy were sent to the disaster area with food, medicine and other relief supplies. Saudi Arabia put 100 million US dollars available. The European Commission released 1.5 million to support Bangladesh. The United States Navy dispatched over 3,500 Marines aboard the ships USS Kearsarge and USS Wasp (which patrolled the Gulf of Oman ) to assist with disaster relief. In early December, USS Tarawa arrived from Hawaii to replace USS Kearsarge . The United States' engagement goes by the code name Operation Sea Angel II .

Other aid organizations quickly followed suit by providing disaster aid. World Vision International sent volunteers to provide shelter for more than twenty thousand homeless people. According to their own statements, they distributed relief supplies to 100,000 people. The Red Cross was also active on site. The Bangladesh Red Crescent initially requested 400 million taka from the international community .

India lifted a ban on the delivery of rice to Bangladesh and allowed 550,000 tons to be shipped to the neighboring state. India also provided relief supplies, medicines, tents, blankets, ready meals and water treatment equipment valued at 60 million rupees .

People in the areas affected by the cyclone suffered health problems such as epidemics from polluted water. Sidr haunted an area that had already been devastated by extensive monsoon flooding earlier in 2007.
