It had an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. The male literacy rate in the town was 74%, while the female literacy rate was lower at 56%. 11% of the population was under 6 years of age.

It is said that the nearby village of Sambavarvadakarai was a part of the Kingdom of Travancore (modern day Kerala), so it is possible that Sundarapandiapuram was also a part of Travancore.[3] A group of people called the "Avur" also believe that the Pandya Dynasty, who were in Tenkasi at the time, built a tunnel, east of the Tenkasi Temple going to Vindhankottai in Sundarapandiapuram.[4]
