Æthelberht (Hwicce)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Æthelberht (also Ædilberht, Æðelberht, Æþelberht, Ethelber ) was an Anglo-Saxon king of the Hwicce in the early 8th century.

Life

Æthelberht was probably a son and successor of King Oshere . Some historians believe that the brothers Æthelheard , Æthelweard , Æthelric, and Æthelberht ruled together.

The few known facts of his life result from documents that he issued or signed as a witness: In 692 Æðilheard, Æðilweard, Æðelberht and Æðelric signed a donation of land Æthelred from Mercias to the monk Oslaf. In 693 the four brothers testified that Oshere "for the redemption of his soul" Cuthswith or Cuthswitha (testified 693-703), the abbess of Penintanham (probably Inkberrow Monastery, Diocese of Worcester), left land. Æthelberht's date of death is unknown.
