Austrian PEN Club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian PEN Club (also PEN Club Austria ) is the oldest writers' association in Austria and a member of the International PEN , based in Vienna and sub-centers in several federal states.

He sees himself primarily as a mediator and promoter of Austrian literature , as a forum and meeting place for writers, as a contact point to international literary institutions and as a defender and guardian of freedom of speech. He is continuously expanding these activities. Relative consideration of the particular sensitivities of the individual political systems in the different countries is not taken, but the dialogue is conducted on a broad basis in order to promote democratic developments. The Austrian PEN does this on the basis of membership of the international PEN community and in coordination with the global community. As part of its work in the Writers-in-Prison Committee, the PEN Club makes numerous appeals each year to the governments of countries in which writers and journalists are prevented from freedom of expression or even persecuted, tortured and threatened with the death penalty. Whenever possible, the PEN Club helps publish books by persecuted or exiled authors so as not to silence their literary voices.

history

The first Austrian PEN center was founded in June 1923, with Arthur Schnitzler as Honorary President and Grete von Urbanitzky as General Secretary. On the XI. The Congress of the International PEN Club in Ragusa (Dubrovnik) in May 1933 led to differences of opinion within the Austrian delegation. The general secretary Grete von Urbanitzky and the delegate Felix Salten had not joined the protest of the writers against the book burnings that had taken place shortly before. As a result, the sympathizers of National Socialism among the members of the Austrian PEN, including Mirko Jelusich , Bruno Brehm and Robert Hohlbaum . The political division of the Austrian writers drove many bourgeois democratic authors into exile. When Austria was annexed to the German Reich , the Austrian PEN Club was also dissolved in 1938, and the centre's assets and archives were confiscated.

On the initiative of Robert Neumann , the General Secretary of the Austrian Exile PEN Club (Free Austrian PEN Club) founded in London in 1939, the Austrian PEN Club was re-established in 1947. Franz Theodor Csokor was elected first post-war president. The Graz Authors' Assembly was founded in 1973 to protest against the course of the Austrian PEN Club .

In 2010 the Austrian PEN Club had to file for bankruptcy, which resulted in a settlement that was liquidated. The new leadership, u. a. with Helmuth A. Niederle as President, Susanne Scholl (2011) and Susanne Dobesch (from 2012) as Secretary General and Michael Amon (2011 to 2013) as Treasurer, has redeveloped the PEN with the involvement of the regional centers and repositioned it in terms of content. Special attention was paid to the literary voices of those authors who, for various reasons, left their original homeland and found a new home in Austria. By reflecting on their cultural roots in different literary traditions, they ensure a variety of literary voices, as it corresponds to the world that is changing due to migration flows. The book series “edition pen”, which is currently under construction, brings together literary works by Austrian and foreign authors. This series of books is supplemented by a number of documents that focus on various cultural-political topics.

  • "Roma Literature Prize of the Austrian PEN" in memory of Ceija Stojka (1933–2013)

The “Roma Literature Prize of the Austrian PEN” was launched in memory of its member Ceija Stojka, the Austrian Roma artist who died in 2013, the writer, painter, singer, dancer, concentration camp survivor, contemporary witness and human rights activist. This award recognizes the artistic work traditionally anchored in Roma culture and at the same time also points out the Roma and Sinti people who were largely discriminated against in Europe and almost exterminated in the Holocaust. Thus, in addition to the award of literary work, it is also a matter of punctuation and warning with regard to human rights. The prize is awarded every three years. An individual application is not possible.

On November 22, 2013, the prize was awarded to Stefan Horvath for the first time at BuchWien.

Samuel Mago was the second to be awarded the prize on November 11, 2016 at BuchWien. Samuel Mago, who was born in Budapest in 1996, is a writer, musician and Roma activist. He comes from a Roma family with Jewish roots on his mother's side. He had been learning German since he was four and moved with his parents to Vienna, where he also completed his school career. For several years he has been considered the voice of multicultural dialogue.

On April 10, 2019, Rosa Gitta Martl was awarded the “Roma Literature Prize by the Austrian PEN in memory of Ceija Stojka” in the Concordia press club. Her artistic work includes visual and literary works. For the first time a woman and for the first time a representative of the Austrian Sinti were honored with the Roma Literature Prize. On this occasion, the book she wrote, “Bleib stark”, was published in edition pen by Löcker Verlag.

European Tolerance Prize for Democracy and Human Rights

In future, the tolerance prize is to be awarded annually by the Austrian PEN Club and the city of Villach as part of the tolerance talks taking place in Fresach. An individual application is not possible.

The previous winners:

  • 2018 Doğan Akhanlı
From the laudation: “Doğan Akhanlı has felt the arbitrariness of an anti-democratic, authoritarian regime several times and, as an innocent writer who sees freedom of expression as a human right, got to know several prisons in Turkey and recently one in Spain from the inside should - in a manipulative reversal of the facts - no good deed go unpunished, ”said PEN Vice President Harald Kollegger at the award ceremony.
  • 2019 Sonia Boumad
Villach's mayor Günther Albel declared at the handover ceremony that the Lebanon-born author would be honored primarily for her work of intercultural understanding, but that the award is also on behalf of those people who, despite war, flight and displacement, have their hopes for the Have not given up on the good and the beautiful in life. "Sonia Boumad is a shining example of human size and intellectual foresight."
  • 2020 Erna Pfeiffer
“What Erna Pfeiffer does is more than a translation - an indication that there are spiritual continents in this world that need to be discovered. In addition, their work is a benchmark for literature that emerges in difficult circumstances. In Europe, and therefore also in Austria, we still have numerous literary voices that fade away unheard. Often the language barrier is insurmountable and then there is a lack of knowledge to understand what is represented in the literature. Erna Pfeiffer provides both, the translations and revisions as well as the information necessary for understanding. These are the reasons for awarding it the Tolerance Prize 2020, ”said the PEN Club in its reasoning for the choice.
