The class 842 (originally ČSD class M 274.2 ) is a four-axle diesel multiple unit for regional transport of the Czech Railways (ČD).
history
In 1988 Vagonka Studénka presented the first two prototypes of the series as the M 273.2001 and M 273.2002 series. The starting point for the design was the consideration of using the proven machine systems of the 810 series for a new generation four-axle vehicle.
After the political change in Czechoslovakia in 1989, the design was revised again. Hydraulic transmissions were provided for the series vehicles.
35 railcars were delivered to what is now ČD in 1993/94. After that, the delivery was canceled in favor of the further developed 843 series . The Slovak Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR) no longer procured such vehicles.
The railcars have been modernized by Pars Nova since 2012 . In addition to the renovation of the interior, new TEDOM motors with a total output of 484 kW will be installed.
The railcars are primarily used in regional traffic with older types of sidecar or with type Bfbrdtn 794 control car (until January 1, 2009 954.0 ) on the non-electrified main lines in the Czech Republic.
