The locomotives of the series ТУ7 and ТУ7А (German transcription TU7 or TU7A) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are narrow-gauge diesel locomotives . They were exported under the names ТУ7Э and ТУ7АE (TU7E and TU7AE) and delivered to the BDŽ (series 94) , ČSD (series TU 46.0) and VNR (series D4H) .
SŽD series ТУ7
As the successor to the ТУ5 (TU5) series, which were only built in around 100 units from 1964 to 1972, the ТУ7 series was developed from 1967. Two variants with 20 and 24 tons of service weight were planned. In 1970, the Kambarka machine works (Камбарский машиностроительный завод) built two prototypes of the 24-t variant and named them ТУ7-0001 and -0002. The lighter variant was not built.
Like its predecessor, the ТУ7 was designed as a four-axle diesel-hydraulic locomotive. It received a newly constructed structure with an end driver's cab and the new 1Д12-400 (1D12-400) engine from the Barnauler transport machine construction factory . A power generator was installed to supply the cars for use in passenger transport. The bogies were taken over from the ТУ5 series.
Series production began in 1973. Around 2500 TU7s had been built by 1985. Only a small part of them were used by the railways subordinate to the Ministry of Transport ( Ministerstwo putej soobschtschenija , MPS). Most of the TU7 ended up on industrial and forest railways. Some of the ТУ7s are used by children's railways.
The vast majority of the TU7s were built for the 750 mm gauge . Some of the TU7 received bogies for the gauges of 900 mm and 1067 mm. The ТУ7 were painted orange as standard.
In 1981, two ТУ7 were equipped with bogies with a gauge of 1520 mm and designated as ТУ7М (TU7M). The otherwise unchanged design did not prove itself for use on broad gauge. Therefore, the dimensions were adapted to the broad gauge profile and from 1982 the ТГМ40 (TGM40) was built in series.
SŽD series ТУ7А
As a test vehicle of the modified series ТУ7А, ТУ7А-2496 was built in 1985. An improved variant of the engine was used and improvements were made to the hydraulics. ТУ7А-2496 was subjected to extensive testing at the Apsheronsk Forest Railway . Nominally, all ТУ7s built after January 1986 were listed as ТУ7А, the actual transition between the two sub-series is unknown. Quite a few ТУ7А were labeled as ТУ7.
Because of the increasing economic difficulties of the industrial and forestry enterprises and the resulting decline in demand, the construction of the ТУ7А was stopped in the summer of 1994. About 800 TU7A were built. Production of these locomotives has been resumed since 2004 - now for pioneer railways . By the end of 2009, however, only about 25 TU7A had been built. The diesel locomotive TU7А-3367 was built in 2014 for the Alapayevsk Forest Railway .
Due to their moderate reliability, the ТУ7 and ТУ7А could not always replace the predecessor series as intended.
SŽD series ТУ7Р
Some ТУ7s were equipped with a snow plow as a special version and designated as ТУ7Р (TU7R).
Series ТУ7Э and ТУ7АЭ
For export, the series ТУ7 were designated as ТУ7Э and the series ТУ7А as ТУ7АЭ. They largely corresponded to the domestic version. First a separate number series was opened, but then the ТУ7Э and ТУ7АЭ were carried within the main number series. In the countries of operation, the locomotives were given new numbers according to the local scheme.
In 1993 some ТУ7АЭ were delivered to Mali .
BDŽ series 94
For Bulgaria in 1981 ten ТУ7 in the track width 760 mm were built, which were not given a designation in the manufacturer's numbering scheme. The Bulgarian State Railways (BDŽ) received six locomotives, the remaining four went to industrial companies. Even so, the locomotives were consistently numbered as 94-01 to 94-10. The BDŽ used its locomotives in shunting service in Septemwri and Cherven Brjag . In 1988 the locomotives were renumbered to class 81. In 2002 there were only three left.
ČSD series TU 46.0
In 1985 the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) received the ТУ7Э-2426 and -2427 in meter gauge design . They were given the numbers TU 46.001 and 002 and were used as shunting locomotives on the Tatrabahn Electric Railway . In 1988 they were renumbered to 706 951 and 952. In 1993 they became part of the Railways of the Slovak Republic (ŽSR).
VNR series D4H
The Vietnamese Railways (VNR) received the meter gauge ТУ7Э-2420 to -2425 and -2428 to -2457 as well as -2573 and -2574 in 1985. In 1988 the ТУ7АЭ-3257 to -3265 followed. They are referred to as the D4H series on site and are used in route and shunting services.
ТУ7Э in Cuba
For the Cuban sugar industry, 85 ТУ7Э were delivered from 1974 to 1977. They received bogies for the gauges of 705 mm, 762 mm, 914 mm and 1435 mm. They were designated as 34,001 through 34,085. In 2004, 24 locomotives were in use.
