Ōmi-dō (Tsukuba)

The Ōmi-dō ( Japanese 大 御堂 ) with the mountain name Tsukubasan ( 筑波 山 ) is a temple that belongs to the Buzan branch ( 豊 山 派 Buzan-ha ) of the Shingon direction of Buddhism. It is located in Tsukuba at the foot of the mountain of the same name in Ibaraki Prefecture , Japan. In the traditional count, it is the 25th of the 33 temples in the Kantō region .

history

The temple was founded by priest Tokuitsu ( 徳 一 法師 - hōshi ; died 843) in 782. Today's temple was rebuilt a little south of the Tsukubasan Shrine (筑波 山 神社) from 1960 after the original temple was destroyed after the Meiji Restoration in connection with the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism ( Haibutsu kishaku ). A thousand-armed Kannon ( 千手 観 世 音 Senshu Kanzeon ) is worshiped .

The temple level can be reached from the south via a longer staircase. Above is the main hall ( 本 堂 Hondō ) and immediately to the right is the bell tower ( 鐘楼 Shōrō ).

Remarks

  1. The main hall is currently (2019) being replaced by a successor building.
