Radical 84 , meaning “ steam ”, is one of 34 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with four strokes.

With 9 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are very few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon. However, this number increased sharply in the 20th century, as many gases were added to the chemical elements , all of which are written with the radical “steam”.

The radical steam only occupies the 84th position in the long - character list of traditional radicals , which consists of 214 radicals. In modern abbreviation dictionaries it can be found in a completely different place. In the New Sino-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 109th position.

The character for air, steam and gas shows three clouds that stand out from the sky. The original meaning of 气 is thin cloud, from which the meaning of the radical is derived: gas as in 氢 (qing = hydrogen), 氧 (yang = oxygen), 氮 (dan = nitrogen). In a few cases, fung acts as a sound carrier, for example in 饩 (qi = sacrificial animal). The symbol 汽 (qi = steam) contains the three drops of water on the left and the radical 84, 气 on the right, which functions as a carrier of meaning and sound. 忾 (in 敌 忾 = hatred of the enemy) contains the heart (忄radical 61 ) and the gas 气 gas in the heart = anger. 忾 can also be pronounced xi, then means sigh and 气 (qi) only functions as a sound carrier.
