.ag is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) for the island state of Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean. It has existed since September 3, 1991 .

properties

Both second and third level registrations are accepted. In both cases, any natural or legal person may register an .ag address. So-called third-level domains are .com.ag (the commercial ending under .ag), .net.ag (the network ending under .ag) and .org.ag (the ending for organizations and authorities under .ag) to disposal. The extensions .edu.ag and .gov.ag can only be used by valid local educational institutions and offices, ministries and authorities in Antigua and Barbuda.

An .ag domain can be between one and 63 characters long, umlaut domains and other internationalized domain names are not supported.

use

In addition to its obvious use as a country-specific top-level domain, .ag is often marketed for German stock corporations . In the past, this has led to legal disputes several times. The Hamburg Higher Regional Court decided in September 2003, following proceedings between Tipp 24 AG and Moramis GmbH regarding the domain tipp.ag , that an address with this ending may only be registered by German stock corporations and that the name of the address with the exact company name of the company must match how it is kept in the commercial register. Also another corporation with limited liability may not use .ag domains. The judgment of the OLG Hamburg was also confirmed by the Federal Court of Justice in March 2005 and thus became legally binding.

The top-level domain is also used by people and companies with reference to the Swiss canton of Aargau (abbreviation AG ).

There is also the application for agricultural topics (Ag = Agriculture).

history

At times, the registry specifically blocked the registration of some particularly valuable .ag domains, although the reasons for this block were not made public. It was not until May 2002 that the process was reversed - around 1,000 high-quality domains became free again in one fell swoop. These included the addresses of German companies such as Beiersdorf , Puma and Adidas .
