.br is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Brazil . It has existed since April 18, 1989 and is administered by the so-called Comitê Gestor da Internet no Brasil (CGI.br) ( Committee for Internet in Brazil ).

properties

The top-level domain is one of the so-called restricted TLDs : private individuals and companies must have a place of residence or a branch in Brazil in order to register a .br domain. Until August 2008, the ending was even reserved exclusively for companies. If the requirement for a local presence is not met, the only option is to switch to a trustee, which is tolerated by the registry. In addition to alphanumeric characters, it has been possible since 2005 to register internationalized domain names with characters from the Portuguese language . At this point in time there were around 750,000 .br domains.

Subdomains

In addition to .br, there are over 60 second-level domains , some of which serve a special purpose: For example, .com.br is intended for companies , while non-profit organizations can use .org.br . There is .ind.br for industry, .psc.br for psychologists or .wiki.br for wikis . Compared to other top-level domains, it is unique that from September 2008 banks can also use their own domain with .b.br . This should especially increase security in online banking .

meaning

Since 2005 .br has been one of the ten most popular country-specific top-level domains for Argentina after .ar . This status continued in the later years, even in 2009 during a general slump in domain numbers.
