properties

Any natural or legal person may register an .ec domain, a place of residence or a branch in the country is not required. Only domains that violate the general moral principles of Ecuador, for example from the pornographic area, are prohibited . There are numerous second-level domains that can only be used by certain owners:

  • .com.ec commercial company
  • .info.ec general information
  • .net.ec providers and internet companies
  • .fin.ec financial company
  • .med.ec medical institutions
  • .pro.ec judges, architects and the like
  • .org.ec non-profit organizations
  • .edu.ec educational institutions
  • .gob.ec Government of Ecuador
  • .mil.ec Ecuador's military

The ending .gob.ec replaced the previously used ending .gov.ec in July 2010. Despite its free availability, .ec plays a comparatively small role internationally; the most expensive sale of an .ec domain ever known was casino.ec in 2007.
